Sensors

Sensors turn lighting on and off, or dim it, based on occupancy or daylight — the mechanism behind most energy-code compliance.

Buying guide: Sensors

The specification that matters is coverage and technology. Passive infrared sees motion across its zones and needs line of sight; ultrasonic sees through partitions and detects minor movement; dual technology uses both and is the usual choice where false-off complaints would be unacceptable. Mounting height and coverage area have to suit the room, and the sensor has to be compatible with the load — a sensor rated for 500 watts of incandescent is not automatically rated for the inrush of the same wattage of LED.

This group covers wall-switch occupancy and vacancy sensors, ceiling and high-bay sensors, daylight sensors and fixture-integrated sensors.
