Matching an existing fixture is mostly a base and envelope problem. An A19 medium screw base, a GU24 twist-lock, a GU10 pin base, an E39 mogul base and an EX39 exclusionary base are all different sockets, and fitting the wrong one can be a safety issue rather than an inconvenience. Beyond the base, the shape has to clear the fixture, the color temperature has to match the ones already in the room, and the lamp has to be rated for the fixture's orientation and enclosure.
