Selection is specified by the ballast, not the lamp. A pulse-start metal halide lamp needs a pulse-start ballast, a probe-start lamp will not strike reliably on an electronic ballast, and the ANSI code (M102, M98, S54 and so on) is the identifier that actually matches lamp to ballast. Color consistency across a group matters in retail and sports; lamps are sold in color-consistency ranges for exactly that reason.
We stock metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps in ED17, ED23, ED28 and ED37 envelopes, in clear and coated versions, with ANSI codes and base types listed.
